According to some material I have on Harold, once his father died, his mother took the children to her father's farm in Oakwood where his grandfather Bauer lived with his Aunt Kate. German became his second language so I assume it was spoken in the home. If the accents were thick then it is no wonder the census records may not be totally accurate.

Harold Whetstone Johnston was born March 19, 1859, in Rushville, Schuyler County, IL. while James was born in Ohio May 7, 1852. Harold attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, in 1875 and graduated in 1879. While there he played baseball, developed, edited and wrote for the college magazine, wrote poetry, was president of Sigma Pi and Commencement
valedictorian. I found a book in our local library entitled "Illinois College, a Centennial History by Rammelkamp. In it were several photographs of Harold. In 1880 he became a recruiter for Illinois College then principal at Whipple Academy where he was for 4 years and then on to professor of Latin Studies at Illinois College. He played baseball as a faculty member and managed the college team. He never attended graduate school but had a Masters degree and PHD given him by Ill College. In 1894 he became Chair of the Latin Dept of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and the family moved there. While they lived in Indiana, his mother and Aunt Kate lived with the family.

Harold authored a book that is part of the Lake Classical Series entitled, The Private Life of the Romans, published by Scott, Foresman and Company of Chicago and New York, c. 1903. I have found a copy in several libraries so you should be able to find a copy. I was hoping for some biographical info but didn't find much in it. He also published Selected Orations and Letters of Cicero, Latin Manuscripts and The Metrical Licenses of Vergil. Not exactly my reading material.

On March 25, 1882, he married Eugenia Hinrichsen, daughter of Edward Eugene St. Salvadore Hinrichsen and Nancy Ann Wyatt. There is a bio of Edward on line at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmorgan/1894/hinrichsen.htm

Harold and Eugenia had 9 children. Mary Johnston, b. July 7, 1883, Katherine Johnston, b. Dec 11, 1885, Eugene Hinrichsen Johnston, b. Sept 5, 1888, Harry Bauer Johnston, b. June 16, 1890, Louise Johnston, b. Sept 15,
1892, Edward Scott Johnston, b. Aug 19, 1896, Anne Wyatt Johnston, b. Oct 5, 1900, Elizabeth Johnston, b. Dec 20, 1902 and William Hinrichsen Johnston b. June 10, 1904.

Harold died June 17, 1912 in Ellettsville, Indiana when he fell from a train
while traveling for the college.

Eugenia was born November 25, 1862 in Alexander, Ill. They were married in
Morgan Co., Ill.

I think that about exhausts what I have and any connection to the Bauer family. 1167
