'Bub' Saltekoff challenges Smith on the GOP side
By Damian Mann
For the Tidings
Republican Morris W. "Bub" Saltekoff is running against incumbent C.W. Smith on t he Republican ticket for the position of Jackson County commissioner in the May 20 primary election. Saltekoff ran against Commissioner Jack Walker in 2006.
"I'm pretty sure I won't get elected," said the 65-year-old retired beekeeper and millwright. "I'm not that well known like Mr. Smith."
He said he's got nothing against the county commissioner. "He's a heck of a nice guy," he said. "I feel I can do it just as well as he can. Unfortunately he's in my way."
Saltekoff said he wants to add a little humor to his campaign and has offered up slogans such as "Join the chorus — vote for Morris" and "This Bub's for you."
He ran against Walker because he said that commissioner treated him unfairly and wouldn't help him in a property dispute. Walker has said he didn't have any recollection of the encounter.
Saltekoff, who has lived most of his life in Oregon, said he opposes any kind of unfair tax, wants increased sheriff's patrols and wants to keep libraries open, protect property rights and have zero tolerance for gangs.
He also wants to protect property rights while defending farm and forest lands.
A former Sunday school teacher and volunteer at a soup kitchen, Saltekoff said he would be a strong advocate for seniors and would offer greater respect to the citizens of the county. He said he wants to protect services for at-risk children and protect programs that provide nutrition for low-income families.
Saltekoff said he didn't have any specific criticisms of Smith.
"I'm not going to attack him — he's an ex-sheriff," he joked.
Smith said he didn't know Saltekoff, but has heard of his family name over the years.
"It's certainly going to be an interesting primary and I look forward to the race," he said.
