Judge Harris, Jefferson, was appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court in 1972. He retired in 1999. Only one justice in the history of the Court has served longer than Judge Harris, Justice Garfield who served from 1941 to 1969.
 
Judge Harris, who is a native of Jefferson, served with the United States Army during World War II.
 
Following the war, Judge Harris attended the University of Iowa where he received his undergraduate degree in 1949 and his law degree in 1951. Judge Harris worked in private practice in Jefferson from 1951 to 1962. During this time he served three years as Greene County Attorney. He was appointed to the District Court in 1962 where he continued to serve until coming to the Iowa Supreme Court. He received the Award of Merit of Iowa Judges Association in 1992.
 
Judge Harris has authored over 800 majority opinions of the Iowa Supreme Court and more than 100 dissents. Since 1986, as the most senior member of the Supreme Court he has served as the chair of the State Judicial Nominating Commission.
 
Judge Harris is married. He has three children and three grandchildren.1517
