Misc. Notes
John Atkinson an itinerant preacher married Jane Watson. Both were neighbors in Yorkshire England 10 years before they were married, however they met again in Canada and were married here when John was 28 and Jane was 15. They were each walking one day (in Canada) and passed each other on the street. They both turned around and recognized each other. Steve Dad thinks God put them together.

Both John and his wife, Jane Watson, were born in Fryston Yorkshire England and came to Canada in the same ship in 1829. They settled in Toronto, then known as Little York. John was the only one of his family to come to Canada. John was a carpenter and worked on the first parlaiment buildings in Toronto.
The Watsons settled at Gormley in Markham Township.
John and Jane were married in 1831 and settled at Victoria Square, Markham Twp. Their family was born there. In 1885 or 1856 the whole family moved to Whitchurch Township (Lot 14, Concession 5 Now known as Warden Avenue).
Research Notes
Edna Atkinson Langman of Elmvale was to England and found a genealogist who followed up her research. It seems that John had one brother and two sisters. The genealogist believes he found the family name in a nearby town, Pontyfact.
According to the genealogist, (1987) John is the son of John and Sarah Atkinson. Registered May 1808
There were three siblings: Joseph, Dec 1809, Mary Jan 1804 and a further Mary May 1806. They believe the second Mary was named such because the first Mary had died as a baby. There are no confirmed buriels.
None of Jane Whitworth's descendants have been found. An old wedding announcment showed names in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Her younger sister was married to a minster in the Peterboro area. (1991)
