(Obituary, Rushville Times, 17 Feb 1887) " Mrs. Mary Lung diedSaturday at home of niece, Mrs. Hester Patteson (of Rushville) ofgeneral debility. Taken to Clayton for burial. Mrs. Mary M. Lung wasborn in Sussex Co., Delaware Sept. 5, 1812, died in Rushville Feb. 5,1887 at he residence of her niece, Mrs. Hester Patteson. Her remainswere taken to Clayton and interred in the Clayton Cemetery by the sideof her husband who had preceded her to a better world. Mrs. Lung wasthe youngest and last of nine children, all of whom were members ;ofthe M. E. Church and lived and died faithful Christians. Sheconverted and joined the M. E. Church, when 13 years of age, and fromthat time her course in the Christian way was steadily onward andupward. Although she had no children of her own, she assisted inraising eighteen, some of them her step-children and some of themorphans without homes or friends. They found in her a friend indeed, and now raise up and call her blessed. As the opportunity was givenin the church for friends to take the farewell look at her dearpeaceful face, a young man rushed out from the congregation leading alittle child by the hand, and bending over the coffin with sobs andtears, called endearing names, "his best friend, his more thanMother". He was a homeless orphan of three or four years of age whenshe took him in and toiled for him with loving hands. He grew toman's estate honest and upright, and is now prospering in a home ofhis own. Truly she needs no eulogy. Her life speaks for itself. Ashort time before she died she said, "Oh, that I could stand up themountain top, and my voice could be heard by the whole world, I wouldpreach Christ". As friends gathered around the casket, old men andwomen with whitened heads, young men and maidens who knew and lovedher, joined their voices in singing one of her favorite hymns:Blest be the tie that binds, our hearts in Christian love. And asthey sang the gloom of death rolled away and a sweet and solemnpeace settled down in every heart. "Let me die the death of therighteous and let my last end be like his"."

(Note: C. H. Neff) Samuel Butler is thought to be the homelessorphan cited in the Mary Lung's obituary. Samuel was residing withthe Jonas Lung family during the 1860 Schuyler County and 1870 AdamsCounty census. Samuel married in 1879 and was residing in Springfieldin the early 1880's. Mary and Jonas had no children however severalchildren were reared in their home in addition to Samuel; i.e.Benjamin Milby's children who were niece and nephews of Mary.
